Description
The Winchester Model 1903 .22 Automatic is a semi-automatic rimfire rifle produced by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company from 1903 to 1933. It was the first semi-automatic rifle manufactured in significant quantity by Winchester. A key feature for collectors and owners is that it was designed to fire a unique, proprietary round: the .22 Winchester Automatic cartridge.
Specifications and features
Action: The rifle operates with a simple blowback action and a balanced breech bolt.
Feeding: It uses a 10-round tubular magazine, which is loaded through a slot on the right side of the buttstock.
Takedown design: The Model 1903 is a takedown rifle, meaning it can be separated into two main parts for easier cleaning and transport.
Stock: The rifle came in two main variants:
Standard (Plain): Featured a straight-grip walnut stock and a plain forearm.
Deluxe (Fancy): Had a checkered walnut pistol-grip stock and a checkered forearm.
Safety: The first 5,000 rifles were produced without a safety mechanism. A cross-bolt safety was later added.
